Beta vulgaris subsp. vulgaris
Swiss chard is a hardy biennial grown for its broad leaves and thick stalks. Sown directly outdoors from April to July, it occupies the bed for nine to twelve months, cropping continuously through autumn and overwintering to provide an early spring flush before running to seed.
