Cichorium intybus
Radicchio is a biennial chicory grown as an annual for its firm, rounded or elongated head of deep red leaves. Seeds are sown between June and July to prevent bolting, the crop occupies the bed for three to four months through late summer and autumn, and plants do not return after harvest.
