Vicia sativa
A hardy annual scrambling climber grown primarily as a green manure for soil-enriching foliage, though tender young spring shoots can be harvested for eating. Sown from late August to October, it occupies beds over winter to suppress weeds and fix nitrogen before being dug in or composted in spring, not returning the following season.
