Brassica oleracea (Italica Group)
Broccoli is grown as an annual for summer calabrese or a biennial for overwintered sprouting spears, harvested for its compact clusters of immature flower buds and tender upper stems. Seeds go in between March and June, plants occupy ground for three to eleven months depending on whether they crop in autumn or early spring, and they do not return after harvest.
