Green manures are fast-growing cover crops sown on vacant allotment soil to protect bare earth from winter rains, suppress weeds, and build fertility naturally. In a no-dig system, they feed worms and microbes without disrupting soil structure or requiring heavy digging. Sow hardy varieties from August to October for winter cover, or quick growers in spring and summer gaps.
